Infloor Heat — 3 Things You Need to Know About It

Those frigid winters and freak cold snaps are no fun. First, you wind up shivering in your own home. Then, if you crank up the heater to try and cope, you wind up paying the price later when your energy bills arrive! It seems like no matter what you do, you just can’t win. You either have to spend an arm and a leg, or you have to freeze.

Luckily, there’s another option — infloor heat!
By taking advantage of a heated tile floor, you can stay warmer and save money.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. It offers direct heat

Part of the reason why infloor heat is so effective is that it uses direct heat. Traditional heaters simply blow warm air at you, so it takes more time and more air to warm you up than if you were to simply touch something warm.
Since a heated tile floor comes in direct contact with your feet, it warms you up in a fraction of the time. In fact, a good infloor heat system should be able to reach your desired temperature in a matter of minutes. Your traditional heater might have to run for hours to warm you up!

2. It takes advantage of basic science

Lots of traditional heaters have vents in the ceiling. However, as you might remember from elementary school science class, hot air rises. Trying to force that air down to where you are goes against basic science — and, unfortunately, it means your heater has to crank out hot air for a whole lot longer.

But when you have a heated tile floor system, the warmth can naturally rise up and heat the rest of your room. That way, your infloor heat system won’t have to try and combat basic science in order to keep you warm!

3. The good systems use electricity, not water
If you’ve been studying infloor heat, you’ve probably heard of hydronic floor heating. While these systems offer many of the same benefits as their electric counterparts, they aren’t nearly as energy efficient.

When you use electric radiant heating, all your system has to do is heat up a network of cables underneath your floor. But when you use a hydronic floor heating system, you have to use electricity to heat up the water — and then you have to use more electricity to move the water through the system. In the end, you wind up using twice as much energy to get the same result!

Most people turn to an infloor heat system because they’re looking for a way to cut back on their energy bills. The best way to do it is with electric radiant heating.
