Infloor Heat – How It Can Work in Your Home
If you’re sick and tired of paying expensive heating bills, there is a way to stay warm – without feeling like you’re burning through money! It’s called infloor heat, and it can be used in virtually any home.
But before you have one of these systems installed in your home, you probably have some questions. Here are all of the answers you need:
– How does it work?
Instead of blowing warm air through vents, an infloor heat system takes advantage of direct heat – by warming up your tiles. This actually keeps you warmer than a traditional heater in two ways. First, because the heat physically touches your feet, your heated tile doesn’t need to be quite as hot as the thermostat on your heater. Second, because hot air rises, the warmth that comes out of your heated tile floor naturally raises up to fill the rest of the room. When you have air vents in your ceiling, it takes a whole lot more energy to try and push that warm air down to you.
– What’s the end result?
A warmer home that burns less energy to stay that way – meaning that your heating bills will drop dramatically!
– How does a heated tile floor get warm?
The secret lies in a network of electric cables that are installed underneath your floors. When you turn on your infloor heat system, those cables gradually start to warm up, and, thus, warm up the tiles themselves. In just a few minutes, you’ll have warm floors!
As an added benefit, your heated tile system comes with a thermostat for each room. That way, everyone in your home can set a temperature that’s comfortable for them. So, if you’re in a room that’s warmer – like in your kitchen with the oven turned on – you can set your infloor heat thermostat a little lower and save yourself some energy.
Traditional heaters don’t have this kind of flexibility. Instead, your heating system has to be set on one specific temperature for the entire house.
– Are there any other kinds of infloor heat?
Yes.
Hydronic floor heating is another popular alternative, but it also uses more energy than an electric heated tile system. That’s because, instead of using cables, hydronic floor heating systems use hot water tubes. However, the water takes longer to heat up than the heated tiles do – meaning that you’ll need to use more energy (and burn through more money!) to reach your desired temperature.
