Your family will also play a role in how long you can go before you have to replace your filter. For example, if your daughter has really bad allergies, you may need to replace it more frequently. Or, if Fido spends a lot of time running around chasing his tail (and kicking up all kinds of pet dander in the process), you’ll probably need a new filter sooner rather than later!

2. You might be able to get a discount
With all of that replacing, the thought of getting a discount probably sounds pretty good right about now, huh?
Some retailers will offer discounts if you buy enough filters. So, instead of buying one Filtrete filter, you can save money by buying 6 or 12 at a time. Sure, you’ll be spending more money upfront, but you’ll also be saving yourself money in the end. After all, you’ll need all of the filters eventually!

3. It’s different than your replacement furnace filter
Well, that’s kind of a true statement! If you have one single unit that heats and cools, you’ll only need one replacement filter. But if you have a separate air conditioner and furnace, then you’ll need a separate replacement furnace filter. That means you’ll have to keep both on their own replacement schedule!

4. It comes with a rating
Whether you’re dealing with a furnace or an air conditioner filter, you’ll see a little number on it. That’s the MERV rating – and it will tell you just how good your filter is at keeping tiny particles out of the air. The higher the number is, the better job your filter does!

5. It can’t be cleaned
